Floragard: Preparing your garden for winter

Before winter arrives in November there is plenty to do to ensure that everything in your garden survives the cold and wet period.

Check paths, decking and patios etc.

Many shrubs and climbing plants etc can be bound with string so that they can be secured to trellis. Plants not generally cut back in winter can be pruned now. On the one hand it is necessary to remove any growth that constricts the stems and on the other hand they must be bound to protect them from Autumn and Winter storms. Garden binding wire is relatively robust, but will eventually become brittle. It is therefore worthwhile to check everything before any part of the carefully nurtured plant breaks off.

Cleaning patios and steps

Now is the time to remove autumn leaves and other debris, so that when spring arrives, everything can be quickly cleaned and made ready for use. Special cleaning agents are available for stone and a high-pressure cleaner can also be useful. If the wood of the decking no longer appears to provide adequate protection against the weather, any protective coatings should be renewed. Oil-based substances such as wood stains that provide permanent protection against the winter dampness are particularly suitable. Check the seals of patios and balconies attached to buildings. Have cracks appeared in the tile joints? In this case they must be repaired to prevent snow that has accumulated on the surface from leaking through into rooms when it melts. Water finds its way through even the smallest crack and can cause immense damage. If necessary, the whole surface can be covered as well as possible with a thick plastic sheet (available in DIY stores) until spring.

Storing furniture during the Winter

Since hardly anyone uses garden furniture in Winter, it should be stored indoors during the wet season. Although many types of wood used nowadays are weather resistant, hinges etc. may not be. Therefore, wait for a dry day and allow everything to dry well in the sun before storing it in the garage or shed. At the same time, you can check for any wear and tear that can be repaired during the Winter. Plastic furniture also fares better in a dry place or at least it will last longer.
