Aloe vera is already established in the natural products industry. And since the coronavirus pandemic, it is experiencing an increase in demand in Europe. Growing consumer awareness of its antibacterial and antiviral properties is making the natural ingredient popular. Aloe vera’s applications have expanded from personal care products, natural remedies, supplements, to home-made drinks and hand sanitisers during the pandemic. The increase in demand provides an opportunity for exporters in developing countries.

COVID-19 has increased consumer interest in health and wellness, boosting demand for natural and organic products. Aloe vera has gained popularity because of its health benefits. It is high in vitamins, minerals and amino acids. It also has antibacterial, antiviral, and antiseptic properties. Aloe vera has the ability to speed up wound healing, improve skin and prevent wrinkles. It can also lower blood sugar levels, reduce dental plaque, help treat mouth ulcers, and has positive laxative effects.

Aloe vera products

A wide range of aloe vera products are available. They include aloe vera juices and drinks and nutritional supplements. Aloe vera is also an important ingredient in personal care products, such as soaps, balms, creams, moisturisers, face masks, toothpaste, and deodorants.

The biggest increase in demand is for aloe vera gel and aloe vera leaves. Many consumers are buying fresh leaves to make their own juices or use in food and beverage products. Aloe vera gel experienced the largest increase in demand, as many consumers started making their own hand sanitisers at home. Some aloe vera suppliers have gone into hand sanitiser production due to the current demand.

Increase in imports

As Europe is a major importer of aloe vera, the increase in demand provides opportunities for aloe vera producers in developing countries. European imports of vegetable saps and extracts, including aloe vera, have doubled from 17,200 tonnes to 34,500 tonnes between 2015 and 2019. Imported volumes are expected to be much higher in 2020.
