The Technified Irrigation Project (PIT, for its acronym in Spanish), which since 2015 has been executed by the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAG), for an intelligent use of water resources, is nominated for the Global Entreps Awards, known as the “Oscars for Sustainability”.

During its execution period, the PIT has implemented 48 parcel irrigation subprojects in various provinces of the Costa and Sierra del Ecuador. With the proper management of the systems built, 5,844 families in the rural sector diversify their production and improve their local economy.

With the subprojects executed so far, a coverage of 6,278 irrigated hectares is achieved at the national level. The total value of the project is 109 million financed by the World Bank (WB), the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID) and the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock.

The work carried out allows the PIT Project to be shortlisted as an initiative that will compete in the final of the 5th Global Entreps Awards. The selection has been made from approximately 5,000 initiatives and projects with good practices in the world that have committed to sustainability and innovation by promoting the Sustainable Development Goals.

The sustainability awards recognize the best international practices creating, promoting and / or implementing programs and projects, as long as they respect nature and the human being.

There are 195 recognitions as best practices, one for each participating country, plus 32 Global Awards for the most impactful, scalable initiatives that offer the most excellent results.

The "Sustainable Family Farming Modernization Project" initiative, which is the PIT Project, is now among the options in the final phase of the competition and is a good candidate to be cited in the video-book of the 300 best practices in the world.

This is the result of the work carried out during the administration of Xavier Lazo Guerrero, Minister of Agriculture and Livestock, and the National Government.
