Portugal creates insurance system to protect farmers from climate hazards After the fall of rain and hail last week, the Portuguese Ministry of Agriculture has taken action to minimize the consequences of climate hazards on crops and to prevent future losses on farmers' incomes. 7/19/2019
The services of the Ministry of Agriculture are in the field to evaluate the damage caused by the fall of rain and hail that on 13th July reached several points of the municipality of Mogadouro, in the district of Bragança. The services of the Ministry are focused on identifying material losses related to situations that may give rise to the need to re-establish productive potential (infrastructure to support agricultural activity and equipment), since, as far as crops are concerned, rains and hail is a risk covered by the agricultural insurance scheme.
To protect farmers from climatic hazards such as the hail fall that has affected the Mogadouro region today, an agricultural crop insurance system has been created to cover this risk and is available to all farmers. The insurance system, which is 60% subsidized by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Rural Development, aims to protect farmers' incomes, taking into account the vulnerability of crops to phenomena such as that which has just occurred. In the meantime, a circular letter has been issued for fruit growers and wine growers, stating the type of intervention they must make in the crops and the treatments to be applied in order to minimize the effects of any problems that may affect fruit trees and the vineyards following the fall of rain and hail.
