Colombia launches incentives for cotton cultivation for nearly 3 billion dollars "We are supporting the 18,000 producers who depend on the cultivation of cotton with two incentives" said the Colombian Minister of Agriculture. 9/30/2020
In order to generate better economic conditions for the 18,000 cotton producers, the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Rodolfo Zea Navarro, announced that two incentives will be launched for this crop for 3 billion dollars. "We are supporting the 18,000 producers who depend on the cultivation of cotton with two incentives, one for the commercialization of fiber and another for planting in the area of the Caribbean Coast and in the Llanos," said the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Rodolfo Zea Navarro. One of the incentives is to support and reactivate the planting of cotton fiber for $ 2.1 billion for the Caribbean Coast and the Llanos, specifically in the departments of Córdoba, Cesar, Sucre, Antioquia, Vichada, Bolívar and Guajira. This mechanism will work taking into account the registered hectares worth $ 300,000. The bet, according to the Minister Zea Navarro is to cover 7,000 hectares of the crop. Now, the other incentive, which is for the commercialization of cotton fiber for producers in the interior area, will have resources for 780 million dollars in order to protect the income of fiber producers against the current situation that may affect the price of fiber. This support will be $ 300,000 per ton. "The incentive for the commercialization of cotton will be dedicated mainly to producers from Tolima, Huila, Cundinamarca and Valle del Cauca who can produce around 2,600 tons of fiber," added the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development. These two incentives will be managed by the cotton union, Conalgodón, who will be in charge of reaching the producers affected by the low prices of the first semester and the volatility of international prices.
