The Portuguese Ministry of Agriculture is assessing on the ground the effects caused by the storm on Sunday, May 31, which mainly affected the North and Central regions, which will allow to identify the damage and the crops affected.

At the same time, measures are being studied to minimize the losses that may be quantified and to outline solutions, such as the creation of a subsidized credit line to support producers who suffered a sharp drop in production caused by adverse weather conditions.

The Minister of Agriculture, Maria do Céu Albuquerque, admits the possibility of using measure 6.2.1 for the Prevention of Natural Disasters and Disasters, which allows support to investments aimed at reducing or preventing the impact of natural disasters, adverse climatic phenomena or catastrophic events. This measure could allow producers in the regions, which are systematically affected, to install prevention equipment, namely anti-hail networks, and thus avoid or minimize future situations.

Maria do Céu Albuquerque also recalls that an ordinary meeting of the Agricultural Insurance System Monitoring Committee is scheduled for 16 June, within the scope of which it is planned to analyze these types of situations, and find ways for a greater number of producers adhere to agricultural insurance.
