Mango consumption in the United States is estimated to double in the next 10 years

The National Mango Board indicates that these forecasts are based on the growth rate of organic mango consumption among North American consumers.

Manuel Michel, Executive Director of the National Mango Board.

Mango has become a "fashionable fruit" and "highly valued" by North American consumers. In fact, with the pandemic, consumers have become more demanding and are opting for a much healthier life, in which mango is paramount and a priority food.

For the Executive Director of the National Mango Board, Manuel Michel, mango consumption in American society continues to grow. In this sense, he comments that “there is no limit, the truth is if it is done well, in all logistics and the mango arrives in the quality it should have, and the promotion is done so that the consumer knows that it is available, I think that there is no goal. He mentioned that per capita consumption is 3.63 pounds (1.65 kg) per person in 2020. A country that produces mangoes like Mexico and has all the availability possible, and they are consuming over 30 pounds per person per year , it is difficult for consumption here in the United States to reach 30 pounds per person, but there is a lot of space between 3 and 30 pounds. And to say a product like avocado or avocado, which is now around 8 pounds per person, I think that mango consumption can easily reach 8 or 9 pounds per person per year. And that can be achieved in the next few years. To double and get to 7 pounds, it can be done in 10 years. "

Growth of organic mango consumption

Regarding the expansion and growth of the consumption of organic mangoes, our interviewee acknowledges that “indeed” organic mango continues to grow, and reveals that, “we see that the consumption of organic mango in the United States is increasing, there are many possibilities that keep growing your consumption. What we know is that many countries use organic practices but do not register their harvest as organic, and that is a step that the industry should consider, and the more the supply of organic mango increases, we see that the demand increases ”.

Analyzing the objectives regarding mango consumption, Manuel Michel comments that “in the last fifteen years we have seen that supply and consumption go by steps, in 2020 consumption took a leap, and if the trends remain the same, 2021 and 2022 are going to be similar. We have reached a point where we believe that consumption will grow faster and that is our projection. Well, we see the mango plantations that are being cultivated in the countries, especially certain regions, in which we see that a lot of volume is expected, and we think that this volume is going to reach the United States and there is a market to receive it ”.

In addition, he also adds that “there is a lot of new plantation in Peru, and also in Mexico, especially in the northern part of the country, in northern Sinaloa, and we know there is a lot of additional volume that comes in these years, and everything indicates that it is not going to be a step as before, but it will grow for several years ”.

Guatemala, Ecuador, Dominican Republic and Brazil

Regarding the production of mangoes in other countries, the head of the executive management of the National Mango Board recognizes that “in Guatemala and Ecuador, it seems that the plantations are the same, and we do not think that they will grow there. In Haiti, it is difficult to know what will happen there because there is not much information, but we do know that last year it increased a lot compared to the previous year, so there is potential there ”.

“In the Dominican Republic we do know that production is going to increase a lot, since they have two hydrothermal plants for mango and they are going to increase to four, and they have the volume. They already have the plantations but they have not been able to with all the volume that exists. We think that there will be more mangoes from the Dominican Republic ”, points out Manuel Michel.

Regarding the expectations of mango production in Brazil, our interviewee emphasizes that "in this country production has increased considerably. In the last two years, mango exports are higher in Brazil than in other countries. He would say that the fastest growing countries, in total volume, are Peru, Mexico and Brazil. They are the three most important ”.

The consumer "very aware" with the mango

Analyzing the importance of awareness of the consumer with a fruit such as mango, Manuel Michel points out that “it is important that the consumer is aware of the mango all the time. This is a basic marketing strategy, that the more times you are with the consumer, the more times they remember you when they do the shopping cart. For this reason, we need more impressions on social media and also that we influence and motivate to make that mango purchase ”.

In addition, he adds that “we are improving our marketing strategy, so that it works better, and we had three main messages for all the public. Now there are going to be many more, to say 12, and within these, we analyze what details we can change to better reach the consumer. It's a lot of work, but we know it does work. "

"Positive" expectations campaign this season

Within the same context, Manuel Michel also reveals the expectations about the mango campaign this season, noting that “from what we know so far, everything is going very well. The climate has helped in all countries. With Peru, which is the one who starts each year, they thought they were going to drop a lot compared to the previous year, and it was not like that. You will end up with 5 to 10 percent less than last year, which is not much, it is within normal limits ”.

"With regard to Mexico, it started early about two weeks earlier than usual, and everything indicates that the harvest is going very well," says Manuel Michel. In addition, he highlights: "We have also spoken with Central America: Guatemala and Nicaragua, and they also say that the volume seems to be normal, better than last year."
