On September 16, from the premises of the municipality of La Gloria (Cesar), a shipment of 19,000 kilos of pineapple will leave for Toronto (Canada). This will be the first export to this destination and the commitment of the Government of President Iván Duque is to continue consolidating the Colombian pineapple in the world.

The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Rodolfo Zea Navarro, said that “we continue to open paths and conquer international markets with this new pineapple export to Canada. During this year, we have managed to send from Colombia to other countries more than 2,000 tons of this fruit to 10 countries. In addition, with the meetings between the companies and the regional authorities, our commitment is to consolidate the region as an export cluster ”.

For her part, the general manager of the ICA, Deyanira Barreo León, added that "from the ICA we accompany the producers in the application of measures for the management, monitoring, reduction of pests, registration of places of production, collection, harvest, post-harvest and phytosanitary certification of the shipment, among other actions, in order to guarantee compliance with the requirements demanded by world markets ”.

The Colombian pineapple has excellent softness, sweetness, a high level of vitamin C, carbohydrates and proteins necessary for the body. For this reason, the export vocation will be resumed and production will be consolidated through productive projects in the department of Cesar and Córdoba, where meetings have already been held with producers and investors with the support of entities such as ProColombia, the Ministry of Commerce and the UPRA, among others.

This export fruit is produced in 14 departments such as Antioquia, which leads exports from Chigorodó, Apartadó and Urabá, followed by Cauca, Valle del Cauca, Quindío, Cesar, Córdoba, Meta and Casanare in more than 150 farms registered in the ICA and the productive area exceeds 3,600 hectares.
“A joint effort is being carried out with the producers to maintain exports, thanks to our condition of being a free country of the Bactrocera dorsalis fly. In addition, the ICA maintains the low prevalence condition of the fly Ceratitis capitata, Melanoloma, and various scales and mealybugs, under the systems approach strategy ”, indicated the General Manager.
