Mexican researchers develop improved corn seeds with better yields and resistance to diseases

They make available to farmers different types of seed with genetic resistance to diseases and that can be planted for years without losing their agronomic characteristics.

Researchers from the College of Postgraduates (Colpos) of Mexico develop a series of corn varieties with more competitive yields than the hybrid seeds that are offered commercially and with greater resistance to pests and diseases, which represents a viable productive alternative with less investment for the country's producers.

The Mexican Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development reported that these varieties developed by the researchers have average yields of 12 tons per hectare, of medium maturity, and can be planted for 5 or 6 years, without losing their agronomic characteristics or yield, in addition to be spread from producer to producer.

This allows a considerable reduction in the cost for the farmer, mainly from the Altiplano region of the country, since, for example, the CP-Vero 1 and CP-Erika 4 varieties are resistant to spike carbon, the CP- Hilda 2 and CP-Tania 5 to horse tooth and CP-Elvia 3 to asphalt stain.

To obtain this advance, the Colpos group of researchers, led by Carlos de León, from the Postgraduate in Phytosanity of the College, carried out a study to obtain varieties of corn with good agronomic behavior and genetic resistance to diseases, and they are economical for producers.

The breeding program started from two corn populations with a broad genetic base, one with a white grain and the other with yellow, for which different maize with good agronomic behavior were collected in the Altiplano.

In this process, the group of researchers studied five or six years of inoculated lines that were selected according to desirable agronomic traits and recombined to start a new cycle of improvement.

Simultaneously, in each evaluation cycle, groups of 10 to 12 lines with characters that were crossed in dialelo were selected to generate a new experimental variety, which is being advanced to be included in agronomic trials with other varieties to measure its agronomic and potential behavior. grain yield.

It should be noted that in corn production the farmer is faced with the alternative of sowing commercial hybrid corn seed or free-pollinated seed, including improved or native varieties.

Hybrid corn seeds represent a higher cost and it is necessary to periodically acquire this input with each new sowing, while varieties such as those developed by Colpos are low-cost and can be sown for several years, compete in yield and spread among farmers. .

The College of Postgraduates pointed out that the institution seeks the training of specialized human resources and promote research work in which students and teachers work in an integrated way to generate results that favor the economic and social well-being of producers and contribute to the food security of thousands of families.
