The Secretariat of Agriculture and Livestock (SAG) of Honduras has managed to import a total of 5,000 international certified Hass avocado seedlings.

This is the first official importation made by the Honduran government from Ventura, California from the company BROKAW NURSERY LLC, to benefit avocado producers in Honduras.

This was made possible by funding from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), reported Erick Martínez, Director of the SAG's National Agrifood Development Program (PRONAGRO).

These seedlings will be grafted onto Honduran nursery stock and will be used in the farms of three nurseries of the Avocado Producers Association of Honduras (ASPAH).

"It is expected that within 4 years, with the adult plants, mother plantations can be obtained to harvest certified seedlings and distribute these plants nationwide," said Martínez.

Several agencies of the SAG intervened in the import process, among which the Directorate of Science and Technology, (DICTA), the National Service of Health and Safety of Agro-food, (SENASA), which gave the phytosanitary import permit and the PRONAGRO who will be the executor of the project.

Likewise, the Inter-American Institute for Agricultural Cooperation (IICA), as administrator of the project, and the Avocado Producers Association of Honduras (ASPAH), whose vice president Geovany Pineda, collaborated in the transfer of the seedlings from California.

Brokaw Nursery is a subtropical tree wholesale supplier located in Ventura County, California.

Sixty years ago, Hank and Ellen Brokaw started the nursery business as a hobby. Brokaw currently produces more than 300,000 plants a year and exports to various countries around the world. They are industry leaders in innovation of new varieties of fruits and rootstocks.
