China receives in July first shipment of fresh US blueberries of the season According to the United States Highbush Blueberry Council (USHBC), the 2024 season will see U.S. blueberry production reach about 319,000 tons. 7/8/2024
In June, the U.S. entered the peak season for blueberry harvest. This year, the U.S. blueberry production continued to remain at a high level in recent years, and the market supply was sufficient. According to the United States Highbush Blueberry Council (USHBC), the 2024 season will see U.S. blueberry production reach 704 million pounds, or about 319,000 tons. Regionally, production in North Carolina, California, and Florida has decreased slightly, but so far, an increase in Georgia has offset the decrease in the above states. Fresh blueberries from the United States were officially exported to China starting in 2021. These blueberries mainly come from Washington State and Oregon, the first and second largest blueberry producing areas in the United States. In particular, blueberry farms in Oregon have exported fresh blueberries to China for three consecutive years. This year, blueberries in Oregon are growing well and the harvest time is a few days earlier than in previous years. The entire harvest season will last until September. The U.S. Highbush Blueberry Association said that this year's production in Oregon and Washington will exceed 320 million pounds (145,000 tons), accounting for 45.5% of the total U.S. blueberry production. The United States is a traditional blueberry consumer country, but only about 5% of the blueberries produced are exported each year. In recent years, the United States Highbush Blueberry Council (USHBC) has been committed to promoting U.S. blueberry exports and has set a goal of increasing exports to 10% by 2025. As an emerging blueberry consumer market, China's blueberry imports are growing, making it one of the key export destinations for the U.S. blueberry industry. In May this year, the United States Highbush Blueberry Council (USHBC) received a $1.3 million grant from the U.S. Department of Food and Agriculture's Regional Agricultural Promotion Program (RAPP) to expand U.S. blueberry export opportunities. July and August are the export season for U.S. blueberries to China each year. This year, the first batch of blueberries to China will arrive in China as early as July and meet domestic consumers again.
