Mexico estimates double-digit growth in its national apple production at the end of the 2021 agricultural cycle

The production of this fruit, considered the one with the highest world consumption, increased at an average annual rate of 8.4 percent in the 2012-2020 period, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development of Mexico.

Apple production in Mexico reached a volume of 714,203.20 tons in 2020 and it is estimated that it could register a growth of up to 14 percent at the end of the 2021 agricultural cycle, highlighted the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.

The federal agency pointed out that in the period 2012-2020, the production of this fruit, considered the one with the highest consumption in the world, increased at an average annual rate of 8.4 percent.

Based on figures from the Agrifood and Fisheries Information Service (SIAP), he explained that the main producing state is Chihuahua, with a volume of 594,711 tons, just over 83 percent of total national production.

It is followed by Coahuila, with 44,748 tons, and Puebla, with a production of 34,454 tons. In 2020, the apple's share in national fruit production was 3.0 percent.

Agriculture highlighted that this fruit is grown in all parts of the world and is divided into five groups: yellow, red, green, bicolor and pippin. Per capita consumption in Mexico is 7.6 kilograms.

In the national territory, he highlighted that its production begins in July and ends in November, with a maximum harvest in September (46.3 percent).

In terms of nutrition, he said, it is one of the most complete fruits since 85 percent of its composition is water, provides fiber and helps to moderate blood sugar levels.

In addition, it contains vitamin A, B6, C, E, calcium, iron, magnesium, nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, folic acid, thiamine, and riboflavin.

Gastronomically there are different dishes prepared with apples such as pork loin, salads, pie, cider, vinegar, among others.
