Peru, in the Top Ten of the World ranking of Capsicum exporters This country is in tenth place, representing 3% of global shipments. 12/4/2024
In 2023, Peru ranked tenth as a global exporter of capsicum; however, thanks to its quality, it has enormous potential to continue growing and improve its participation, said the president of the Capsicum Committee of the Association of Exporters (ADEX), Walter Seras Pacheco. At the 1st Capsicum Business Meeting, organized by the business association, he explained that the country ships these products in canned, dried, paste, fresh and frozen form. "We are in tenth place, although we barely represent 3% of global shipments. The challenge is to take advantage of our potential and double this percentage in the coming years," he said. In this regard, he recommended putting emphasis on some destinations already won such as the US – the most important –, Mexico – the main market for dried fruit – and other emerging ones such as Guatemala, whose orders grew 26% last year. He also highlighted Asian nations, especially China, which thanks to the megaport of Chancay could become a great destination for fresh capsicum. He also suggested looking closely at the presentation in paste, since its demand increases year after year. Although it is only 2% of the total, in 2 or 3 years it could reach 5%. "The world needs supplies and we are the ideal pantry," he emphasized. Agenda Seras Pacheco warned about the problems faced by the sector such as the use of prohibited pesticides (chlorpyrifo, paraguat and glyphosate), the scarcity of certified seeds and the contamination of water resources by heavy metals. Climatic phenomena and price speculation also affect production, reducing volumes by 35% in key areas such as Barranca. “The use of these pesticides should be avoided, as it reduces our competitiveness and markets could be lost. Let us remember that these crops generate income for thousands of Peruvian families and employ a significant part of the rural population, which faces significant challenges in a context of political and economic crisis,” he added. He commented on the increased demand from the United States, which in 2022 imported more than 1,268 tons for $1,537 million. "It is a key destination, with preferences for varieties such as yellow chili and bell pepper," he said. On the other hand, he called for strengthening public-private work in order to overcome current challenges and consolidate Peru's position as a global leader. "With innovation, sustainability and market diversification, we can take Peruvian capsicum to the next level," he concluded. In turn, the second vice president of ADEX, Rafael del Campo Quintana, highlighted the benefits of the Chancay megaport, however, he indicated that more exporting companies, new markets, qualified labor, quality production and logistics infrastructure are needed. “Only in this way will it become the hub of the region,” he added. Figures According to figures from the ADEX Data Trade Commercial Intelligence System, between January and September 2024, capsicum shipments abroad amounted to US$ 223 million 697 thousand, showing an increase of just 1% compared to the same period in 2023 (US$ 222 million 479 thousand). The most exported presentations were dried ones –concentrating 54% of the total–, followed by canned (42%), fresh (2%), pasta (2%) and frozen. Paprika was the main product (US$ 103 million 489 thousand) accounting for 46% of the total, followed by piquillo peppers and bell peppers. As for its destinations, the US led the ranking with US$ 85 million; despite contracting -11.3%, it represented 38%. In second place was Mexico (US$ 57 million) with a slight decline of -0.3% and a share of 25%. The top ten was completed by Spain, Puerto Rico, Guatemala, the United Kingdom, Canada, Germany, France and Brazil. Data - Peru ranked 19th as a world producer in 2023. - Lima, La Libertad, Lambayeque, Arequipa, Tacna and Pasco accounted for 74% of production last year. - The 1st Capsicum Business Meeting was sponsored by Cultivida, and supported by Hortisemillas, ADB International, Tinpac, S&M Foods, Inagroup, Qapaq and Alprosac.
