Committed to the reactivation and growth of agriculture, the Minister of Agrarian Development and Irrigation, Angel Manero, said that the unblocking of irrigation projects in the north and south of the country will promote the generation of thousands of productive jobs and increase the country's foreign currency, as well as the conquest of new international markets.

He said that the unblocking of the 4 large irrigation projects (Chavimochic III, Chinecas, Majes-Siguas and Alto Piura) will contribute to expanding the agricultural frontier by more than 236,000 hectares, and the generation of 421,000 jobs linked to agro-exportation.

He recalled that last April, the State-to-State contract was signed between Peru and Canada for the execution of the third stage of Chavimochic III, with an approximate investment of 750 million dollars, for the benefit of nearly 130,000 producers in the north of the country.

He also pointed out the reactivation of the Chinecas (Áncash) irrigation project after almost 20 years, with the incorporation of 50,000 new hectares and the improvement of 33,000 hectares, benefiting 17,500 families in the valleys of Santa Lacramarca, Nepeña, Casma and Huarmey.

He also highlighted the recent signing of an agreement through which the regional government of Arequipa transferred ownership of the Majes Siguas project to the Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation (MIDAGRI), which will allow the resolution of the obstacles that prevented the execution of this important project, which will increase the agricultural frontier by 38,500 hectares and benefit 350,000 families in the Arequipa region.

She also highlighted that the presidential message announced the formulation of the technical file for the Alto Piura irrigation project, an initiative that will facilitate the incorporation of more than 40,000 new hectares for the benefit of 20,000 local farming families.

The Government, through MIDAGRI, continues to promote initiatives to boost the sector and promote agricultural investments.

President Dina Boluarte said that by July 2026, large irrigation projects will be underway, such as Chavimochic III (in the La Libertad region), Chinecas (Áncash), Majes Siguas II (Arequipa), Alto Piura (Piura), Yanapuquio (Moquegua-Arequipa) and Las Delicias (Lambayeque). All these projects will add up to a joint investment of US$ 3,000 million and will allow the incorporation of more than 200,000 new hectares for agriculture.

Rehabilitation of terraces

Likewise, the minister reiterated the commitment of the Government and MIDAGRI to carry out the project to recover 120,000 hectares of terraces, located in the mountains and the jungle edge of the country, and which will be executed with an investment of 650 million soles.

This initiative, called “Project for the Restoration and Revaluation of Terraces” has the following goals: recharging and strengthening water in the basins to store and secure water for agriculture, restoration of the terrace systems and incorporation of technical irrigation, articulation with the market and revaluation of the culture of water and crops in terraces.

“The impact (of the restoration of terraces) will be tremendous, only in agricultural surface we are talking about more than three Majes-Siguas projects; In addition to cultural landscapes, there will be an efficient use of water, soil and microclimates, which are generated there and allow the development of important biodiversity," he noted.

He indicated that with the project to recover terraces at a national level, it is estimated that productivity will increase and poverty conditions will decrease for nearly one million farmers dedicated to family farming in Andean and high Andean areas.
