The Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation of Peru reported that the National Agrarian Health Service - SENASA certified 177,622 tons of grapes during the 2020-2021 Export Campaign, which runs from September to January in the Piura region. Phytosanitary certification is an essential requirement to export this product to any international market. According to the official record, this year the export volume exceeded the 2019-2020 campaign, which only reached 144,271 tons. The positive results of this campaign are due to the increase in production sites, the good phytosanitary management of the crop and the joint effort with producers to control and eradicate fruit flies in various areas of the region. Phytosanitary support The work of SENASA during the development of the campaign represents an important phytosanitary support for the producers. In this campaign, 108 grape production sites were certified, distributed over a total of 7,385 hectares. For the processing of this product, sanitary authorization was granted to 19 primary processing plants, located in the region. To date, the agricultural health authority has approved work plans with the United States, China, South Korea, Taiwan, Mexico, New Zealand, Thailand and Puerto Rico for grape shipments. These work plans involve subjecting the fruit to special treatments, as a quarantine measure to control possible immature stages of fruit flies. The main grape varieties exported are red globe and crimson seedless, a Piura production that reaches 53 international destinations, with the United States as the main importer with 59,843 tons. The areas with the highest production are located in the Middle Piura, a sector that has had greater economic opportunities despite the pandemic.
